This particular company is into real estate and if there is global contraction to any greater degree that too will drop.

5% of its invested assets are in real estate. Have to have an asset mix. How long can an insurance co hold an asset? Quite a while given the nature of its obligations.

Life insurance is a very stable business.

The question was how do you make money out of Japan and China, etc.

Sell them life insurance, I said. These are countries where folk like to save and are therefore very good life insurance markets. Japanese people are very long lived - good environment for a life insurance company.

MFL got its Japanese business basically for free by partnering with an unsteady Japanese insurer that got into trouble with is asset quality and MFL took over the policies. Nice. No good will on the books and they got a sales force. MFL has lots of experience in group benefits insurance and annuities and is a strong marketer.

It comes to Japan without the kind of baggage a lot of Japanese insurers have with regard to poor assets, etc.

It does business in Hong Kong and Shanghai.

MFL is the only N American life insurance company I know of doing business in Japan but there are probably others. Whether they've managed to insinuate theri way into the industry there the way MFL has, I don't know.
