A loose, peaceful, neutral confederation would be a better alternative. Afghanistan is a perfect buffer state for Pakistan, iran, old soviet stans + russia, and even india and china. Partition, at best is a second choice. Economically, afghanistan is probably not viable any way you look at it. But its pivotal location makes it a very important country to help become so. We should have realized that and done that after soviets were kicked out. I know 20/20 hindsight is a great thing. mike
