Speaking of the hard dope...

Here's an interesting piece on the CIA, the Medellin cartel, and a CIA-owned airline named "Southern Air Transport."

Contras, Crack, the C.I.A

The only reason I mention this is because I, too, have an anecdote... <g>

It was the summer of 1988 and I was landing late at night at the airport at Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, which was then still a Soviet puppet regime.

For some reason the pilot taxied way out through a darkened area before heading toward the terminal.

As the plane turned I spotted -- in a little pool of light lit only by the headlamps of trucks -- one jet with the word "AEROFLOT" in Cyrillic on its side, and one jet with the words "SOUTHERN AIR TRANSPORT."

Four or five white guys were shuttling pallets of boxes from the Southern Air plane to the Soviet plane.

Very curious!

A year or two later, back in Addis, I happened to meet an American diplomat at a function. She was convivial and cheerful, right up until I mentioned the little midnight tableau I had witnessed. I've never been shut off so fast as I was then. She went stone cold.

Maybe it was my breath? LOL!

(I don't even want to know anymore)
