The ones that I have seen have an initial period during which suicide negates the policy (usually around 2 years). This prevent people from running out and buying a bunch of insurance when they decide to commit suicide.

On a slightly different note, I know of one example where a man was making payments on a policy for 10+ years and missed the last one or two payments because his mental condition deteriorated. Subsequently, he committed suicide and there was no payoff because of the missed payments...not because of the suicide.

In any case, I hope that guy is not serious, but he sure sounds like it...
