but this reminds me of exactly what my Muslim friends say, "Why do they always specify 'he's Muslim'? Why not just say he is a guy from Detroit?"

Good question.

Why are we emphasizing this fellow's Jewish-ness? After all, we don't say, "The suspected bank robber is Christian," do we? And we all admit that some crooks are Jewish too.
