g_t, actually it is a little worse than the Post article says. No one in clinical medicine believes those of us
now in our 40'+ who were vaccinated as children have ANY immunity to smallpox. I suspect whomever was talking
to the Post reporter did not want to incite a panic. At least the contract HAS been awarded for the other
155 million doses. My friend at Merck must not be terribly disappointed, though Merck was bidding along with Glaxco for the contract. There is not much money in it and Merck was insisting in negotiations with the government
that they be granted indemnity for the 1/1000 serious complications. Complications be damned. I for one
as a practicing doc will jump at the chance for re-vaccination. And it will be nearly a year before the mass supplies are ready. It is all getting scarier by the day...just keeps marching on, reminiscent of Barbara Tuchman's book
"The March of Folly." I am grateful for my shares in Goldcorp and Franco-Nevada. It looks like those who called
us Chicken Littles are the real fools. And it is a sad observation, our entire civilization being in far more danger, I fear, than I first imagined. I am basically one mean son-of-a-bitch when it comes to payback. My mother tells
me so every once in a while. That young 32 year old CIA operative who was killed by the Taliban ought to be worth
a muslim country or two in payback. I want us to get back to a "Teddy" stance...just don't F**K with us.
