Enron to vacate S&P 500 index

NEW YORK, Nov 28 (Reuters) - Standard & Poor's said on Wednesday Enron Corp. (NYSE:ENE - news) will be removed from the S&P index of 500 top companies after the close of trading on Thursday and replaced by multimedia graphics firm NVIDIA Corp. (NasdaqNM:NVDA - news).

Standard and Poors said in a statement Enron was being removed from the index for ``lack of representation'', an announcement which came as Enron's market capitalization suffered another blow on the market.

Enron, an energy trading firm, on Wednesday edged closer to the brink of collapse after Dynegy Inc. (NYSE:DYN - news) scrapped a rescue bid which will have resulted in the two companies merging.

Shares of Enron -- which was only recently ranked No. 7 on the Fortune 500 list of biggest U.S. companies -- closed on Wednesday off 85.27 percent at 61 cents -- an all-time closing low, while NVIDIA shares ended down $2.73 or 5.05 percent at $51.36.
