JT> " Again "
...indeed :-/
The speed with which the folks over here have given up / are continuing to give up everything that is Americanism in a frenzy of Nationalism is utterly amazing... un-imaginable, really.
Yet there is this fantastic sheen of normalcy, Jurgen ~ television is still banal, the shopping malls are still chock full of cheap imported stuff, they still target children (now over 50% obese) with junk-food advertisements and the ever-present Myth of the Cowboy persists in the American psyche.
When you watch the news, (there is no news) now they fill the spaces that used to be headlines with questions : "Is Mullah Omar Dead?" "Should we Torture Terrorist Suspects?" and then sometimes the headlines on 'the news' are these frightening, so-called "polls"...
..."85% of Americans favor incarceration of terrorist suspects without public charges, wiretapping without judicial oversight and end to attorney-client privilege" "60% of Americans favor Military Tribunals in place of judicial processes".
so it's like this mob mentality, difficult to describe; you keep wondering: what comes next ?
few people, including most party members, educated folks either cynical enough or, real-politic enough to say (or simply think, since speech is dangerous now), "Dubya is simply taking advantage of a national tragedy to save an utterly failed Presidency" ~ few of these party members realize the true depth of Dubya's fundamentalism...
...he is quite different from Poppy Bush in that regard. Poppy and that whole group were Episcopal, not Evangelical - Dubya broke from the Church we all grew up with; and he, himself actually rationalizes his actions, overseas and at home via his personal belief that the 9-11 attack "was a gift from God". Understanding this aspect of him, the depth of this (for there is so little else of depth evident) in him ~ may be important because, when all is said and done...
...and you point out so many ironies yourself, I am beginning to think that Dubya's "personal vision" is to use Nationalism to transform Americanism into some kind of Fundamentalist Theocracy.
BWDIK ?
I didn't understand the dot.com'ers, coming as I did from a libertine "baby boom" sixties generation; I couldn't understand making money for money's sake...
...I don't understand failing to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution in order to defend it; iow, politics for power's sake.
I can only assume, Jurgen that, "The New War On Terrorism really is Going According To Plan", and that: I am just DELUSIONAL AS USUAL (^_^)
