Robert Bly and Sunil Datta's Lightening should have fallen on Ghalib

I waited almost a year to buy this book. Thought it would be something like Colman Barks "The Essential Rumi" which is an outstanding piece of art.

But this one was such a let down. I guess the lightening did fall on Ghalib, in an awful sort of way ! The book KILLS Ghalib. I believe someone should sue the authors for selling such a shoddy and crappy translation of the greatest poet ever...

Listen to this translation ! It made me want to weep with frustration !

Hazaron khwaishein aisee ke har khwahish pe dam nikle
Bahut nikle mere arman lekin phir bhi kum nikle

Each desire eats up a whole life; desires come by thousands.
I have recieved what i wanted many times, but still it was not enough.

And another -

Chipak raha hai badan se lahoo se paidaband
Hamari jeb ko am hajat-e-rafoo kya hai

Blood makes my whole shirt stick to my body
The good thing is I don't have to repair my collar

Where does he get this translation from ? There is no shirt or collar mentioned anywhere......it's such a touching verse about blood sweat and tears....

And listen to this

Aah ko chhahiye ik umr asar hone tak
Kaun jeeta hai teri zulf ke sar hone tak

One can sigh, but a lifetime is needed to finish it <LOLOL>
We'll die before we see the tangles of your hair loosened.

Aah is translated as 'sigh' ! LOL The guys are morons. If it wasn't so pathetic, it would be funny !

And there's more

Har ek baat pe kehtee ho tum ke tu kya hai
tumhi kaho ke ye andaaz e guftgu kya hai

Each time I open my mouth the Great one says "You - you who are you ?"
Help me, how would you describe the style of such a conversation ?

Sheesh ! Its not even the literal translation. Certainly not what the poet wanted to convey in that beautiful verse.....

These are some of the MOST beautiful and profound verses ever written in the world of poetry, can you even *like* them if you were reading Bly's translation ?

I am really really very disappointed at the kind of stuff that is allowed to pass thru as genuine work of translation. My 12 year old can do a much better job !

The book goes back to Amazon tomorrow !
