Wednesday November 28 9:38 PM ET Intel Suit Against Broadcom Under Way
dailynews.yahoo.com WILMINGTON, Del. (Reuters) - Opening arguments got underway on Wednesday in the first day of a jury trial in which No. 1 chipmaker Intel Corp. (Nasdaq:INTC - news) is accusing competitor and communications chipmaker Broadcom Corp. (Nasdaq:BRCM - news) of infringing Intel patents in ``nearly every aspect of its business.''
The trial, expected to last three weeks, marks the first time the two rivals have taken their grievances before a jury, and both sides declined to comment on the prospects of settlement.
Filed in August 2000, the lawsuit has been split in two, with the first trial addressing two patents, one for a networking chip and one for a digital video chip, said Bill Blanning, a spokesman for Irvine, California-based Broadcom. The next trial will center three patents on two digital video chips and on packaging, as well as Broadcom counterclaims of unfair business practices and abuse of industry standards.
``We're going to defend ourselves vigorously and expect to prevail,'' Blanning said.
Chuck Mulloy, a spokesman for Santa Clara, California-based Intel declined to comment. |
