TOKYO (AP) - Tokyo stocks fell moderately Thursday morning after Wall Street's decline depressed local market sentiment. The dollar was lower against the yen.
The benchmark 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 68.08 points, or 0.64 percent, to 10,556.73 at the end of morning trading. On Wednesday, the average closed down 324.08 points, or 2.96 percent.
The dollar bought 123.11 yen in late morning trading, down 0.47 yen from late Wednesday in Tokyo and also below its late New York level of 123.16 yen.
On the stock market, the Nikkei moved lower with activity centered on selling of technology issues following Wednesday's slide on Wall Street.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average lost 160.74 to 9,711.86 on Wednesday. The Nasdaq composite index closed at 1,887.97, down 48.00.
The broader Tokyo Stock Price Index of all issues listed on the first section retreated 10.42 points, or 0.99 percent, to 1,042.87 Thursday morning. The TOPIX closed down 26.30 points, or 2.44 percent, the day before. |
