Consumer confidence fell in November for the fifth month in a row, raising new concerns about the willingness of American households to spend during the holiday shopping season that started last week, the Conference Board reported yesterday.

The business research group said its index fell to 82.2 this month, from a revised 85.3 in October.

Many analysts follow changes in consumer confidence for clues about future consumer spending, which accounts for two-thirds of the nation's economic activity. But for two months now, falling confidence has not translated into a similar drop-off in sales.
