Defect density, or however you want to refer to the ratio of bad die to good die, is far greater on AMD's process, and Hector was kind enough to give a very good indication os just how much.

Yes their yield must be far lower than Intel would get for a similar size die. I'm surprised Hector didn't realize how dumb his statement sounded when you run the numbers. There's a formula for predicting good die per wafer based on die size and defect density and by that definition you are correct that AMD's yield stinks. It's been obvious when you look at their quarterly output and the number of wafers per week their fabs are capable of.
