OIL AND GAS, SAKHALIN ISLAND, RUSSIA

Hi Thomas,

Margolis has some interesting conjectures. One of the interesting tidbits I've run across in the past couple of days is the fact that Exxon is involved in an E&P marine oil & gas development project on/near Sakhalin Island, Russia. Such a source would serve well to pick up the slack on Alaskan oil as it begins its inexorable production decline. Sakhalin is potentially a real boon for our West Coast refineries. I would assume that part of the chess table talk at Crawford a couple of weeks ago concerned the notion of Sakalin being in play for the U.S. to ease up on the Unocal plan for a Tengiz-Gwadar pipeline. Termez, mentioned by Margolis, is just a mid-line pumping station. So, for now, as I see it, the Russians will continue to send the Caspian oil west into Europe, we get the Pacific stuff, and South Asia gets a 20% stake in the Sakhalin I project. The game continues.....
