Barghouti warns of severe response to Israeli sanctions

By Itim

Marwan Barghouti, leader of Tanzim, Fatah's military wing, said on Thursday that Israel's policies toward the Palestinians in the territories could eventually lead to severe responses the likes of which Israelis have never known.

Barghouti added that the participation of a Fatah member in the shooting attack near the Afula central bus station on Tuesday, in which two Israelis were killed and dozens injured, does not portend a shift in either the group's policy or strategy. The Tanzim leader told the Palestinian news media that Fatah will continue to pursue its struggle against Israel within the confines of the West Bank and Gaza.

Barghouti emphasized that there is no doubt that the attack in Afula, conducted jointly by a Fatah man and a member of the Islamic Jihad, was a result of the severe Israeli pressure and sanctions on the Palestinians people.

Erekat denies deal to arrest Palestinians wanted by Israel
Palestinian Cabinet member and top negotiator Saeb Erekat, denied on Thursday reports published in the Israeli media that the U.S. Mideast envoys reached an agreement with the Palestinian Authority on the arrest of Palestinians on Israel's wanted list.

Under the alleged agreement, Israel would lift the closures in the territories on the condition that the PA arrest Palestinian militants Israel accuses of terror activities.

In an interview with the Voice of Palestine radio station, Erekat said that as of yet there have been no agreements reached between the U.S. envoys and the PA. According to Palestinian sources the situation will become clearer after Palestinian security and defense officials meet the U.S. emissaries Thursday evening in Ramallah.
