Christians urge Israel to block Nazareth mosque construction

By Reuters

Representatives of Christian churches in Jerusalem urged Israel on Thursday to revoke a decision to allow a mosque to be built near the Catholic Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth.

The 13 representatives said in a statement that the construction of the mosque on public and Islamic Trust land in the town where Jesus was brought up, was ill-advised and incomprehensible.

"We renew our appeal with a greater sense of urgency than ever to the government of Israel to revoke a decision that may have incalculable consequences on many levels," the statement said.

"We are asking all Christians and Muslims throughout the world to join us in this effort and to do so now," they said.Israel initially approved the building of the mosque, but said two weeks ago that it had ordered a halt to construction work because the builders had not received a building permit.

Plans call for part of the mosque to be built over the tomb of Shihab el-Din, a nephew of the Muslim hero Saladin who ousted the crusaders from the Holy Land eight centuries ago.

Christians believe the Basilica of the Annunciation is built on the spot where the angel Gabriel told the Virgin Mary she would give birth to the son of God.

The Christian leaders accused Israel of "sowing division between Christians and Muslims" in the Holy Land. The construction plan also drew criticism by th Vatican.
