Matador,

re: WAP - Omnipoint - WAP Forum

That clip about Omnipoint's role in the birth of WAP (for GSM) is accurate in so far as it goes.

Omnipoint did issue the tender referred to on their own behalf but all of the North American GSM carriers were watching it closely.

Principle respondents to the tender were Unwired Planet which went public as Phone.com and is now OpenWave, and Geoworks. I'm not sure that Nokia responded directly. They may have, or they may have gotten involved after the fact.

The matter was decided in a two day meeting of the GSM North America AG (GSMNA), not by Omnipoint acting alone. At that meeting if I understand it correctly, Nokia agreed to throw in their lot with Unwired Planet, and so WAP Forum was formed.

I commented on that some time ago here:

What is not clear to me is the status of GeoWorks claim against Phone.com. Essentially in early 2000 they claimed that Phone.com infringed their patent (US 5,327,529) and that anyone using the WAP interface would need to pay Geoeorks a licensing fee ($20,000) and a 10% royalty on every WAP enabled device. Phone.com in turn filed a suit that attempted to stop enforcement of Geoworks' claim that it holds patents covering devices, applications and content that use WAP.

Do you - does anyone - know where this stands?
