kirby <do you really want to be a powerful predator>

Is that a trick question?<lol> Even the vegetarian preys upon the plants that permit him to live another day. Life is a symbiotic process my friend.

Power comes in different forms. We all have some. It's just a question of how much and what we do with it. That's where values and ideals come into play.

Many great books have been written about these issues. In a quick post, we'll keep it simple. The bagman has little or no impact on society regardless of what his values and ideals are. A wealthy and powerful man can do great good or harm depending upon his nature.

When we move to group behavior, there's always a ruling elite. The old monarchies had court and nobility to round out the dominant class. In socialist systems it's entirely political in capitalism it's a plutocracy (our society is attempting to combine the two).

Every system has it's elite ruling group that acts primarily in its own interest and only secondarily for the sake of the general population. Social philosopher John Locke talked about the social contract or compact between the rulers and the ruled. There's always a certain element of tension, perhaps a not so subtle tug of war between the two elements of society from time to time when civil disorder increases.

Trouble usually begins when too much wealth and power is concentrated in fewer and fewer hands leading to abuses and corruption. In recent America, it's CEO and other exec compensation going ballistic while workers spin their wheels AND politicians along with our unelected government (the tenured civil service) being increasingly unaccountable and abusing their power.

All JMVVHO. No more time for historical philosophy today<g> So have to leave it at that.
