Here's what the government is concerned with: if the stock market fails, consumer confidence falls more; thus, consumer spending falls more, which is 2/3 of all economic activity in the U.S. If the consumer fails, goodbye economy. The government knows this and wants the stock market higher, much higher, IMO.
