Prejudice and racism exist everywhere. I don't think that the US gov't has said that it doesn't exist. That would be a silly assertion. I believe that what is important is if it is made formal through government policy. In fact, it is through racial quotas. Even though these quotas are there to benefit minorities, they are clearly racist.

I am certain that in places where racism is more accepted, that it is much easier to figure out the system. You know the limitations, therefore you don't have to try and guess. People know there place. However, where it is accepted, it is the status quo and there is no hope for change. No reason to change either. In the U.S., it may be harder to deal with the subtle and unstated racism, but that racism has a stigma associated with it. That stigma can be bad for business if a light is fixed on it. There are strong motivators to, at the very least, not act on racist feelings. This will be the seeds for true change over the long term.

The U.S. ain't perfect, but at least it is walking a path that can bring it (culturally) to a more enlightened place.

I don't know how Malaysia is as a place to live. I have spent maybe a month there over several trips. Culturally, it was very western friendly and the different sub-cultures there seemed to live in a certain harmony. Of course, that is from an outsider's POV.
