RESEARCH ALERT-Prudential cuts Echelon to 'sell'
NEW YORK, Nov 29 (Reuters) - Prudential Securities said Thursday it has cut its rating on Echelon Corp. (NasdaqNM:ELON - news) to ''sell'' from ``hold.''

Analyst Nicholas Heymann said Echelon, which sells software that automates industrial equipment and building systems, recently cut its outlook for fourth-quarter earnings to 13 cents a share from 15 cents.

``ELON products are working as designed, but implementation issues (are) slowing program ramp-up,'' he wrote in a research note.

Heymann said the company's base business also is slowing due to weaker global economies. He said earnings estimates may have to be revised further without an economic rebound in 2002.

Echelon shares closed Wednesday at $16.40 on Nasdaq.
