I couldn't get over 60 year old men deferring to me and saying "Yessir".

I had the same experience. I lived on the Florida Panhandle and Biloxi Mississippi for a while during the 60s. I remember old men stepping off the sidewalk into the gutter when they walked past me. That's why I was so stuck by my friend's statement that he preferred the South. He and I discussed it quite a bit. He preferred to be restricted in what he could do to not knowing what was expected and getting blindsided. (We were both working at the Pentagon at the time.) I can understand his attitude intellectually, but, still, it seems so sad.
