2000/9/12 - RCMP Get Their Man Using Biometrics - Imagis ID-2000 Biometric Facial Recognition Accurately Identifies Criminals
Vancouver, BC, September 12, 2000; Imagis Technologies Inc. ("Imagis"), a global provider of advanced digital identification and imaging solutions through biometrics, announced that the RCMP detachment in the greater Vancouver area of British Columbia has successfully identified and convicted criminals using ID-2000, Imagis' biometric facial recognition software.
The North Vancouver detachment uses Imagis' computerized arrest and booking system, CABS, and has established a database of more than 8,000 offenders. The detachment wanted to improve its ability to rapidly and accurately identify criminals so they added ID-2000 facial recognition software earlier this year.
"ID-2000 was what we were looking for. It has revolutionized our ability to identify offenders. Frequently, all we have to work with is an image, a photograph, or a witness drawing of a face. Now, we can positively identify people much more rapidly and extremely accurately," said Sandy Ferris, Forensic Identification Technician. "For example, use of ID-2000 enabled us to identify an offender who was in the database under three aliases, so we found out we were dealing with a single criminal, not four. We have also identified suspects from drawings produced from a witness description of an offender's face."
"Our software not only recognizes faces but also tattoos, objects and images. It is designed to integrate flawlessly with existing law enforcement and security applications," noted Iain Drummond, President & CEO, "and it can be used over wireless systems in the field."
"Although ID-2000 facial recognition technology plays a key role within the law enforcement market, we are working on a number of vertical applications that respond to the emerging market need for security and reliability, including e-commerce. Our core technology is bringing solutions in a number of areas including passport/visa authentication, ATM authentication, LAN access, social security systems, federal corrections systems and driver's license systems," stated Mr. Drummond.
