SEC head Pitt says Enron will be "thoroughly" investigated...

Thursday November 29, 5:34 pm Eastern Time

WASHINGTON, Nov 29 (Reuters) - U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission chairman Harvey Pitt said on Thursday that the SEC will investigate Enron Corp'S (NYSE:ENE - news) situation ``thoroughly but quickly''.

``You can be sure that we will investigate the situation thoroughly but quickly, and if wrongdoing occurred, make sure that the people who are responsible for that will answer,'' Pitt said in response to a question when speaking to the Consumer Federation of America.

Commenting that Enron itself has confirmed that it is the subject of an investigation by the SEC, Pitt stopped short of detailing the agency's probe.

But he said one of the issues raised by Enron was ``the extent to which corporations disclose to their shareholders information that can have a material impact on what the shareholders equitable investment and interest is in the corporation.''
