Unexpected traumas are always harder to bear....they create panic...and sense of losing control.

I read Rage of a Privileged Class by Ellis Cose shortly after it was published. I recall being annoyed by the accomplished blacks interviewed, who came across to me as spoiled and whiney, looking for small slights. One point, though, that came through loud and clear is the risk that one can be rich, accomplished, and admired, experiencing no trace of prejudiced for years, decades, a lifetime--and then some yokel comes out of nowhere, calls you "boy," and your comfort level just vaporizes. I can appreciate how scary that might be.
