Beloved Expression Doesn’t Make Sense,
Says Linguist
"Built like a brick shithouse" is used commonly but doesn’t make sense, says Oscar Dumas, assistant professor of Multinational Quibbling at the University of Colorado at Denver. "Think about it," he says. "Built like a brick shithouse. It’s supposed to evoke images of something really well built. It’s ridiculous. Who would really want a brick shithouse to be that well built? I would say the average person building a brick shithouse would build it pretty solidly, because you wouldn’t want it to cave in on you while you’re shitting or something, but not solidly in the sense of being more solid than other structures on your property."

"I don’t understand why Oscar feels so strongly about this," says Madeline Dumas, his stepmother. "But he’s a linguist . I guess this is the kind of thing linguists think about. Frankly, I’m worried about him."
