Teevee The lumber tariffs are a shameful example of US corruption and and double crossing. No doubt. But I'd still rather deal with them than be in the position of the Finns when they had to deal with the Soviet Union.

The lumber thing is odd because it seems to be a bit of "free enterprise policy making" on the part of individual politicians and an industry group rather than government policy. I'd like to know if money changed hands.
Or what sort campaign financing promises or threats were made to Baucus, who is leading the charge. And equally interesting who in the Commerce department got the burr under their rump, and why. The lawsuits, if the Canadian producers ever get their acts together, will be astronomical.

Canadian media haven't really done a very good job of it. Why hasn't the Vancouver Sun hired some US 'researchers' to pan the sediments in US Commerce department and senate? Plenty of big and little nuggets there, I'm sure.

The soft wood thing is a perfect example of corporate nanny-statism. Find it every where in the world: Total disregard for economic common sense so a few can profit at the expense of everyone else. Adam Smith complained about it and some new Adam Smith will be complaining about it 225 years form now. It sure as hell hurts us, right now.

But on the larger scale of things the US is on the side of the angels.... It's incredibly irritating.

Personal note. I voted in favour of Mulroney's free trade platform in the hopes it would protect us from US swamp water politicians. Fond hope, eh?
