PT - Re: "Thanks for mentioning the removable drive option as it has some very attractive aspects: speed, verification, single media, off-site option, complete data backup rather than working set which would be limit for a CD."

These "cages" require a 5 1/4" slot in a PC chassis. The main frame bolts in like an old 5 1/4 drive - and you connect the IDE cable and power cable to this "frame".

A removable carriage slides out and you mount a 3 1/2 inch hard drive inside the carriage - which has its own IDE connector/cable and power cable. The drive generally fits real snugly in the carriage - and you don't need to use the screws to bolt it in place (real handy when you want to pop it out and store it somewhere - and/or stick in another drive.)

The Carriage - when inserted into the frame - makes electrical connection to the frame via a quick-disconnect connector - similar to the old Centronics-type connectors (at least for the kind that I buy).

These units generally run from $19 to $24 - and are available even for Ultra AT/100 drives.

The good ones even have a key lock with a power on off switch - so you can remove the drive without powering down your PC.
