Hynix Surges on Report of Possible Tie-up With Micron (Update1)
By Ian King

Seoul, Nov. 30 (Bloomberg) -- Hynix Semiconductor Inc. shares surged to a five-month high after a local newspaper said Micron Technology Inc. Chief Executive Officer Steve Appleton is in talks with Hynix and its creditors on a possible merger or other alliance.

Hynix shares rose as much as 7.1 percent to 2,195 won, the highest since July 6 after the Dong-a Ilbo newspaper report, which cited unidentified officials at both companies. The stock was up 3.7 percent in recent trading.

Micron, the second-largest memory chipmaker, would be linking up with a company that has been rescued by creditors twice in five months and is selling chips at below cost.

``Any report of a sale or merger involving Hynix is going to help its stock price,'' said Jeon Woo Jong, head of research at SK Securities in Seoul.

Micron spokesman Sean Mahoney declined to comment on the newspaper report or any negotiations that the company may be conducting.

``Considering the market conditions, virtually everyone in the industry, except Samsung, has contacted us regarding some kind of strategic alliance,'' Mahoney said.
