IGIT, I will be totally honest with you... your objections make no sense whatsoever, at least not to me... they are equal to "not wanting to accept" that some verses of the Qur'an are applicable only to specific circumstances that happened 1500 years ago or so... true, if a similar situation ever arises, they can be used as guidelines...
this "not wanting to accept" is what makes someone like me question the ulterior motives of the other person... in this case, you... for they translate basically to one of two things... (1) that you truly do not like the Qur'an one bit, hence unable to look at it with an unbiased view, and simply do not want to accept any explanation of it other than what makes ugly (2) you simply want to cast some shadows over any given explanation.
IGIT, please understand, I am not necessarily saying that you have to be one or the other, I am just letting you know what comes to my mind when I see similar arguments. You may say that I am biased to Qur'an... SURE... I believe that God is Most Merciful and Most Gracious... hence, I can not comprehend the idea when someone claims that the Qur'an, the word of God, promotes violence and terrorism.
as for the game "telephone"... a game is a game and is surely different from compiling a book based on authenticated sources that go back to the Prophet's (pbuh) time... that is what I believe.
