IT industry slows move to mainland

By Alfred Lee, The China Post

The exodus of IT manufacturers from Taiwan to mainland China has slowed down so far this year because of the worsening world economic situation, according to the Market Intelligence Center (MIC) of the Institute for Information Industry.

However, an MIC analyst said yesterday, this year has seen more LCD monitor makers move their manufacturing operations to mainland China. Last year only one percent of the LCD monitor production was made on the mainland. The rate rose to 29 percent this year.

The analyst, Wang Shen-hong, said the migration of Taiwan IT makers to mainland China "has shown a considerable downturn this year,"

Previously the MIC estimated that 30 percent of the shipment this year made by Taiwan's notebook industry would have been from their mainland factories. So far this year, Wang said, the plants on the mainland have contributed only four percent.

Taiwan notebook makers delivered 138.28 million units this year. Of them 553,000 were from mainland China.
