Ref - < "In any case Intel's design win says that Intel has a good shot at elbowing out TI from its dominant position in the cellular phone Digital Signal Processing Market"

Saturn, that's a pretty big deal, and that's putting it mildly. Do you really think so? I mean, this is TI's bread and butter, and they ain't no low to mid-tier chip house >

I wish to modify my earlier assertion that Intel stands a good chance of elbowing out TI from its dominant position in the cellular phone Digital Signal Processing Market. I meant that Intel MIGHT ELBOW OUT TI FROM THE 2.5G and 3G CELLULAR DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING MARKET.

My reasoning goes along the following lines. Most 2.5G and 3G phones will have a built in PDA. The extra bandwidth makes no sense unless you have a minimum PDA level CPU in the handset.

Given the number of recent design wins of the STRONGARM chip, Intel will clearly become a big player in supplying the PDA market. And STRONGARM is Intel's Trojan Horse into the next generation cellular. See Ron Smiths presentation in October 30 webcast. Intel has successfully integrated the DSP function into the STRONGARM chip, and presto TI is out of the cell phone/PDA.

TI is handicapped by not having a PDA chip with the capability of STRONGARM. For the next phase Intel is planning on integrating the Flash memory with the PDA and the Signal Processor. The lack of Flash capability will handicap TI further in responding to Intel's inroads.

The design wins for NEC first 3G phone suggests that the Intel strategy is working, and Intel has a decent DSP technology to elbow out TI.

Obviously TI can continue to dominate the DSP market for the plain vanilla handset market, but even there it will have to scramble to integrate Flash into its DSP chip.

Intel's strategy can be summarized as INTEGRATE AND CONQUER.
