UPC Ends Microsoft TV Software Contract
LONDON (Reuters) - Europe's largest cable operator United Pan-Europe Communications has decided to cancel its cooperation with U.S. software giant Microsoft Corp. to install its software on set-top boxes, an industry source said on Friday.

Microsoft, which is a minority shareholder in Netherlands-based UPC, has struggled to get its software ready for use on a new generation of set-top boxes which UPC needs to offer interactive television to its retail customers.

A few months ago Microsoft delivered the final software code, only to hear now that UPC does no longer want to use it. It is widely believed UPC will solely use software from Microsoft's U.S. rival Liberate.

Liberate was only brought into the UPC operations when Microsoft ran into software developments problems one year ago, and UPC needed a quick fix to go ahead with customer trials.

Liberate declined to comment, but a spokesman said it had successfully finished trials. Set-top boxes with its software were being shipped to UPC customers in several countries.

UPC, which was not available for comment, no longer believes it will be able to ship 250,000 of the new digital set-top boxes by year-end, it told investors after its third quarter results last month.
