I had no idea this had happened. I went out to move my truck, and they were playing an old Beatles song I was real familiar with but had never heard on the radio before. When the DJ spoke between songs, though he didn't say as much, it was apparent he was eulogizing George Harrison.
Oh, the wonderful times my daughter and I had when she was really small and we'd dance to most of the songs on "Cloud Nine".
Until that album, I considered George a really masterful songwriter (especially once he got out of the giant shadows of Lennon and McCartney) whose songs were best played by others, but I really felt differently about that album.
Wish I could remember the movie, but some movie used one of his songs in the closing credits, played by someone else, and it was wonderful! I think it was with "Cloud Nine" that he finally matured as a performer, and I wish I could've heard him go back and rehash some of his older songs once he'd reached that mark. Would've loved to have heard "Something" sans Beatles.
I really can't think of a whole lot to say here as I'm just typing this off the top of my head, but I'm a Beatles fan from way back, and this is a sad day for me. I belonged to a clique at school (you know -- the audio-visual and band geeks) who would go entire days using only Beatles lyrics in our conversations, and would rewrite the lyrics to so many of them (ala Weird Al).
I remember very clearly everything about the moments I found out that John Lennon and Freddie Mercury (Queen is the only group I've ever loved more than Rush or The Beatles) had died, and this is yet another moment I'll never forget.
