You mean he was the only white or the only white American....there are a lot of Europeans and South Americans in the grad schools also.

I think you're right.....I started on a PhD program and quit to get married...I always regretted it even though I did well in my technical career. That's how I observed that PhD's are so much more likely to suceed.

Couldn't be further from the truth....the atmosphere in grad school is night and day to undergrad. My son got his PhD in Materials Science and absolutely loved the environment. He hated to leave. His social circle consisted primarily of Europeans, S. Americans, and Chinese..... He tells me the Chinese were not much for the social scene opting instead to work in the lab.
