I asked Pat about the Epiphone Les Paul Black Beauty. He says that price is so low because it's a line that Gibson turned over to Epiphone to make low end versions of.

The version you may be thinking of is much more expensive.

Just passing that on so you know in case you are considering it. He said a new Les Paul Black Beauty Gibson version would probably wholesale for $2500, retail for $3500. A version he knows of in the store is from 1954 and can be had for the low, low price of $7,000.
