Air prep necessary, IMHO. NA thinks they needed the airstrikes to enable the advance, and that's what's important. I just maintain that there is a difference between perceptions and reality. But perceptions are not irrelevant or to be ignored just because they have no basis in reality. Again, IMHO the psychological benefit derived from the airstrikes, irrespective of any actual benefit, is far more important than any actual benefit.
Battles are largely won and lost based upon what is between people's ears. Numbers of troops, technological superiority, etc. are of secondary importance. NOT irrelevant, just not the decisive determinant, unless the differences are colossal. This is clear from the history of all types of conflicts, wars, sports, all sorts of things: the one who should win on paper is not necessarily the one who wins at all, and not infrequently the underdog emerges the victor.
