dear j-f, you are not an engineer and I am. You do not know your pay scales. But what you really don't understand is that good engineers while working on the job working in high tech companies become far more qualified than any PHD.

An engineering degree is a ticket. A BS will get you in the door and then you will be allowed to show your stuff. Yes a higher degree will get a higher entry level, but a smart person will succeed once in the door with any degree. Advanced degrees will also more likely induce a company to sponsor a foreign national for a visa.
Advanced degrees can help ones career in some industries and some companies. But if you done the job the advanced degree is not that important.

Advanced degrees in dictate ability in a limited way. What one has done while working is far more important.

The internet and at you fingers research and information make going for advanced degree a dubious investment. In some engineering jobs an advanced degree may be useful. BUt the pace of change in technology is so fast the it's occurring in industry and not at colleges.

The reason so many advanced degree candidates are on visas is simply that they can stay here, are more likely to get a job here and there is no or far far less opportunity at home. There also may be no electricity.

As suggested, few engineering jobs require citizenship, but the extra cost of sponsoring a visa and the fact the visa dudes are a lot cheaper means that only advanced degrees folks end up getting to stay and possibly apply to become citizens.

I think it great that America is a sink of the best and brightest from around the world. I have no problem competing with them. That's the American Way...
