Hawk,

>But the steel industry received some reprieves and so did the semi-conductor industry when faced with

Let's make sure we are clear here. The steel and semi-conductor issues are with Asian countries not enjoying a free trade agreement with the US.

>those involved in the US logging industry live in homes too. And they go to Home Depot
>too.. But they won't be going there if they don't have their jobs.

Last year, Canadians had about a 30% market share. No one has suggested that Canada wants to own the US market or even expand it beyond what it is.

>And the same argument you can make with regard to timber, can be made with any other national resource which
>can be effectively "given nearly free of charge" to their favored industries, including mineral rights, oil rights,
> fishing rights... etc.

And that is why they tried to negotiate a "free trade" agreement. We all live in a global environment and should behave that way. Would you turn the clock back and look inwardly and reject anything "unamerican". That is called xenophobia and was discredited long ago.

>I certainly don't see US timber companies being sold to Canadian companies as being an option.

Wow, Hawk, smell the roses. Weyerhauser owns much of the Canadian industry as well as having their interests in the US. When all this was going on, and asked for a comment, they said something like "Well, yeah..no, er I mean yes, or what was the question again?" Other US companies have similar interests in Canada.

When you come down to it Hawk, Canada is in many ways just a client state to the US. What we are discussing here is just a few thousand jobs for Canadian workers. Much of the profits and other benefits end up in the States anyway. Does that make you feel better?
