I don't mean to be flip, but you should try hanging out with more optimistic people sometimes !
What kind of work do your unemployed friends do?
When you say "decent" job that might be the sticking point. My underemployed dot-bomb friends fondly remember the "old days" of unlimited expenditures (which caused silly decisions, btw) and now have to settle for part-time consulting at 1/2 the income, and probably will until a sustained upturn. One of them lost well over $100 mill in paper, and that's got to be depressing, but he doesn't let it bother him, for some reason he's still fiendishly working on new projects.
We'll slow down until inventories are worked off, and then back to biz.
You bring up a serious point, tho' and I hope the general sentiment stays optimistic, and think it will. We have a habit of finding reasons to celebrate - imagine what happens when OBL gets dealt with. We'll continue to see new technologies in bio, networking, and things like Kamen's "IT / Ginger" thingie this Monday on Good Morning America. We eat that stuff up.
We're such an incredibly industrious nation that the economy could go into the bucket by 50% and we'll still eat, sleep, drive cars, and bring ourselves back into full capacity w/in a year or two. IMO |
