I'll agree with you on some of the false tech productivity hype. Microsoft's operating system is a joke compared to what more technically competent systems would have evolved into (DEC for just one example), and has cost zillions of hours of frustration, crashes, incredibly stupid requirements for millions of consultants just to keep it running, whose time could better be used to build better apps, etc.

Like wacky Perot quoted we "should be living in alabaster cities undimmed by human tears" by now, with all the tax dollars we've paid. Ditto the technology effort that's been expended.

So, imagine the perfect US society a few years from now, and how we can get there, and I'll bet working 80 hr weeks isn't part of it. But that would be productivity at it's best, wouldn't it?

After all, an information economy can expand indefinitely, when you get past basic food/shelter and start selling intellectual property back and forth.
