I agree that period of "cleansing" of junk and rampant speculation of the 90's would be good for the long term. But the media and political climate is forcing them to pull all stops to keep the ponzi scheme going.

Although J6P may not have sufficient % in stocks, what about the corporate benefits in higher stock prices ? It kick starts the limping stock option scams and the resultant benefit to the bottom line due to favorable tax treatment etc. Obviously helps in lessening the defined pension plan burdens at places like IBM etc. The venture capital arms of companies like MSFT, INTC, CSCO etc suddenly have inflated assets that can be monetized. All that extra money can start the virtuous cycle of capital spending boom with a little fiscal stimulus from the govt. on AMT tax reform etc.

As they say it is easier to predict if you can create it!
