I can't say I'm surprised by your reply. I agree that debating your contention that the Pope and his billion followers (among many other groups comprising the vast majority of those who call themselves Christian) aren't "really" Christians would take the discussion away from the nominal topic of this thread.

But in a sense this is very germane to this thread. Whether or not you believe Catholics, etc. are Christians I assume you'd agree that these groups call themselves Christian? And that the world in general considers them (even if erroneously) all branches of Christianity?

Because this distinction between a large group that calls itself one thing being rejected by a smaller group which believes that it alone represents the "true faith" exists everywhere. Just as you contend that the majority of those who profess to be adherents of Christianity aren't "really" Christians I can assure you that there are groups in Islam (and Judaism, etc.) who believe the same about the bulk of the followers of their faith who have "strayed" from the "true path".

So if there are those within Islam who believe passionately in the self-sufficiency of the Qur'ran then I believe that answers your original question which began this tangent.
