CASCADES INC: DOMTAR INC - Norampac Announces World's Most Efficient Hydrogen Generator - Gets A Heart
Toronto, Ontario, Nov 26, 2001 (Market News Publishing via COMTEX) -- Norampac Inc., the largest Canadian manufacturer of linerboard, corrugated medium and corrugated packaging products, took delivery of the 80 tonne, 40 foot long heart of the world's first commercial steam reformer. The huge boiler is a key component for a $30 million environmentally friendly steam reformer being built at the Norampac Trenton Division in Trenton Ontario to convert pulping liquor into clean burning hydrogen.

Construction of the provincially and federally approved steam reforming facility at the Trenton mill will begin immediately, creating 50 construction jobs for two years. When processing begins in 2003, the steam reformer technology will convert pulping liquor from the mill, into hydrogen-rich fuel gas, steam and soda ash that will all be reused in the papermaking process.

"This steam reformer will be a model of efficiency and environmental responsibility for other paper mills to follow," said Gary Hodgins, General Manager, Norampac Inc. "This new technology will allow the Trenton Mill to grow and continue to be a major employer in the Quinte region."

"Norampac is to be commended for being the first company to implement this environmentally friendly technology," said Federal Minister of Agriculture and Food and Minister coordinating Rural Affairs, Hon. Lyle Vanclief, "I am proud to say that when this is in operation, we will have North America's cleanest paper mill in our region."

Paul Macklin, Member of Parliament for Northumberland, commented "The implementation of steam reforming technology in Trenton is a major and positive development for Northumberland and Ontario, both environmentally and economically. Not only will the Trenton operation now be the cleanest in North America, but the Norampac Trenton Mill is now at the forefront of innovation in their industry."

Norampac Inc., a joint venture between the packaging divisions of CASCADES and DOMTAR, is the 9th largest North American and the largest Canadian manufacturer of linerboard, corrugated medium and corrugated packaging products. Norampac Inc. Trenton Division is a world-class producer of packaging medium in Trenton Ontario. The Trenton Mill produces 500 short tons per day of corrugating medium at the only closed loop paper mill in Canada.
