As I have said, I thought at the time that all the appellate decisions in the case (both at the state and federal level) were either wrong or ill-advised, and sadly, all politically motivated. The passage of time, and other unfortunate events, have caused it to drop from top-of-mind awareness, but it will probably take a full generation before the full effect of the damage is undone. You are correct that it is ironic that the "state's rights" advocates were quick to jump into a state matter. I also agree that Bush has responded better than I would have expected. I attribute that to the people he has surrounded himself with, in people like Powell, Cheney, and Rumsfeld.
