U.K. Company Profits Slide, Pointing to Slower Economic Growth
By Andrew Atkinson

London, Dec. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Harvey Nichols Group Plc said sales at its luxury department stores are ``significantly lower'' than a year ago.

Granada Plc, Britain's biggest commercial broadcaster, said advertising revenue this quarter will be down 12 percent. The ad market is the worst in a decade.

Premier Farnell Plc, the largest supplier of electronic components in the U.S., said third-quarter profit plunged more than a third.

The U.K. economy, the fastest growing among the Group of Seven this year, is being buffeted by shrinking economies among its major trading partners and rising unemployment. That was the message from British companies reporting earnings this week.

``Britain can't be immune from the slowdown that's happening everywhere else,'' said Jonathan Loynes, an economist at Capital Economics. ``Things have got worse in manufacturing and there are signs that consumers' confidence is starting to soften.''
