wbmw, I am sure we'll get to evaluate whatever comes out of Dell. I don't know if you remember but when our know-nothing hardware guy was ordering the latest batch of machines from Dell, the Dell guy was trying to push the P4s instead of the P3 tualatins that our CIO wanted. To convince our hardware guy to go with the P4 the Dell sales guys said that it's the fastest machine out there including the tualatins and the Athlons. Needless to say this guy ordered a few, we installed them and guess what ? Our CIO is now pissed because these boxes barely achieve parity with the 1Ghz Coppermines we got last year. I know you say some benches show the P4 in good light but most F500 companies do bench their computers and if they are promised a level of performance that the machines do not deliver in reality then you will have some pissed off users which translates to pissed off CIOs and pissed off ( or fired ) hardware guys. The only redeeming quality of going with Intel right now is like you said the fact that they will be improving the P4 constantly during its lifetime and they may at some point optimize it enough where it will perform good in real applications.
