And a particular aspect of the money picture, customer acquisition. Here in Washington, if Comcast dumps its cable ISP customers, most will move to Verizon DSL. Then Comcast would have to turn around in six months and spend several hundred dollars per customer trying to reacquire those users - users who were cut off with almost no warning before (if Comcast hadn't paid up).

So they can agree to give the ATHM creditors an extra $20-30 per customer for 6 months and keep those customers for a very long time, or damage their credibility and spend much more trying to get them back.

If I were the Comcast CEO, I would have my checkbook ready and an obsequious grin on my face as I asked the ATHM bondholders what they need to keep going.
