Schumpeter was a free market economist, but not an Austrian. Well, he was from Austria, but he's not a member of the Austrian school of economics. His best known work has to do with understanding the evolution of capitalism. He called himself an economic sociologist. He wrote very broad macroeconomic history. He was big on business cycles.
