Why should I waste my time with somebody who doesn't even know the basic definitions of SAN and NAS as evidenced by the fact that you stubbornly continue to believe that SAN and NAS are mutually exclusive solutions and NAS is disruptive to SAN?

Face it, Pirate. You're not really interested in an answer to your so-called question. You just want to use every opportunity to cast doubt over EMC's lead in NAS to downplay NTAP's persistent loss of market share over the last two years. Such a child.

Just so this is not a total waste of time, I'm going to post some more IDC numbers.

1) Total external storage is expected to decline from $17.7B in 2000 to $14.9B, or by 16%.

2) DAS will decline by 27.4% to $6.8B.

3) NAS will grow by 13.6% to $1.85B.

4) SAN will grow by 5.8% to $6.25B.

5) Open Systems SAN will continue to grow much faster than Mainframe SANs. Open Systems SANs (~$4.35B) will grow by 12% while Mainframe SANs (~$1.6B) will decline by 14.2%

EMC is growing much faster than the market in SAN and NAS. EMC's NIS revenue will go up from $2.1B in 2000 to $3.2B in 2001, or by 54%.

It will lose the most market share in the ~$1.6B mainframe SAN market where its share will go down from 38.7% to 23.5% while IBM's share will go up from 32.3% to 50.4%.

NTAP is growing much slower than the market in NAS.

'Nuf said.
